Abstract

This study shows how Winckelmann’s ideal of the beautiful youth was politicised and idolised during the French Revolution. The androgyne asserted itself as an image of opposition during the turbulent times around 1800 until it was suppressed around 1830 by a heroicisation of masculinity.
