Scheibelhofer is dedicated to the mutual influence of stereotypes of masculinity, notions of strangeness and strategies that migrants use to deal with images conveyed to them. In particular, he argues that the image of the archaic-dangerous Muslim man within the structures of racism and social inequality fulfills two central functions: as an antitype of normative masculinity, it offers a way to positively define a national ‘we’ and as an example of ‘controlling image’ individualized ways to rebel against marginalization without questioning structures.
